ANTIQUE 2.1 Carats Tapered 25 Old Mine Cut DIAMOND Full Eternity Band PLATINUM Ring Wedding Stacker Romantic Gift Edwardian Unisex Large Sz
Selling a collection of antique rings, sourced one piece at a time from around the world. Many more coming soon - thanks for stopping by! : )
ABOUT:
Oh we just loooove to find antique eternity bands where the diamonds are so chunky they crop out of the setting! This one totals about 2.1 carats and is a scarcer one in that it is a larger finger size which can be difficult to find in antiques. It is tapered slightly to be smaller at the back making it a bit more comfortable to wear than some of the more donut-y ones : ).
I get a lot of requests to source these and of the old mine eternity bands out there, many are newly made settings - so, harder to find an original condition antique. Each of the hand chiseled antique stones graduate slightly in size, nesting in bead prongs nicely for that all around sparkle. Perfect to stack, with the wonderful texture of the 25 chunky old mine cuts cropping out of the sturdy band. Edwardian to Art Deco era piece, crafted in platinum - I love looking at it from the side to see the diamond crowns catch the light. Also love to see that each side is hand engraved with the ornate scrolling antique details.
Extra chunky! Some of the old cut diamonds in this ring have the single row of crown facets that are long and triangular scissor cuts. These are sometimes mistakenly referred to as Peruzzi cuts but they are not, despite having some similar tendencies. (Mine cuts typically have three rows of facets to the crown whereas these have the single row of long facets.)
Some of the diamonds are more elongated cushion, some more square or rectangular shaped with that great antique sparkle. Perhaps a combination of a French cut / Old Mine Cut ? as diamond cutters at the time used their personal knowledge, taste and expertise to enhance each diamond. It is always fun to find uniquely cut antique diamonds! And also not uncommon to find a mix of old mine hand cut methods on the same piece, as jewelers of the time used what was available to them and these old stones were in much more limited supply compared to the millions of carats of modern machine cut diamonds produced each year now.
No hallmarks that I could find but sold to me as platinum and tested strong to confirm, it looks and acts the part so no doubts or questions there.
Antique box not included.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and the pictures can make it difficult to see scale.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Size 9 1/2. Weight is 5.8 grams. Eternity rings can't be sized unless a seam is added to be worn at the back inside the palm but this would be something to discuss with your local jeweler to be sure they would take on the work as it could risk the stone settings and is generally not advised. Opinions vary with modern jewelers working on antiques.
It is 4.1mm wide north to south at the face, tapering to about 2.7mm at the back, by 2.3mm to 3.1mm tall / deep as the diamonds crop out of the band at various heights, the platinum setting is about 2mm deep all the way around.
The largest diamond is about 3.6mm tapering down to 2mm. Measuring each stone I'm getting about 2.1 carats total weight in diamonds, expecting it to be upwards of that due to the chunky cuts. The largest ones at center being around .2 carat each give or take. Note that this is an estimate, having to measure the stones while they are set, as I would never remove them for exact measurements.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Two of the smallest diamonds at the back are old mine single cuts so they don't have as high of crowns but appear to be original to the piece, likely due to the size that had to fit. The others are the wonky chiseled chunky old mine cuts.
The trade off for the chunky crowns and the 100 years to the piece is that there are some chips and frosty flakes of loss to some of the stones. This is also typical for antique eternity bands that can spin on the finger and have stones coming into contact with surfaces on the palm side of the hand. None broken in half or cracked, all fill the settings completely so there are no gaps, but some frosty flakes of loss to one side or top edge here or there, to a small handful of the stones. Most with natural inclusions, some frosty spots here and there. I thought I saw a carbon spot to one of the smallest stones but I can't find it now so nothing glaring in that regard. Four of the smallest stones appear quite frosty as a whole.
Also typical for antique stones are some varying hues, one of the larger having a lovely almost champagne hue but the majority with varying degrees of warmth.
The piece is sturdy and well made, not overly fragile or delicate, although I don't usually recommend 24/7 if for no other reason than their age alone, especially when a piece has so many small stones. Of course it can always be done, but just at your own risk. Although I see more loss with vintage and modern machine made pieces than with high quality hand made antiques like these.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
