Antique SNAKE Head and Coiled Tail Reticulated Scales Chain 20g 18k Gold Solid Victorian Figural Heavy Necklace

Antique SNAKE Head and Coiled Tail Reticulated Scales Chain 20g 18k Gold Solid Victorian Figural Heavy Necklace

ABOUT:
A rich and beautiful shimmery 18k gold antique necklace with a 3D snake head with a loop in its mouth to hold the spring ring clasp. The head leads to the articulated links of the body which serves as the chain, with slinky liquid chain movement and a scale like design. It widens at the center like an actual snake and tapers again towards the tail. The chain culminates in a coiled loop that holds a jump ring to serve as a clasp.

The perfect staple chain with a fun figural detail. This one is antique but has a real shimmery and vibrant true gold color so it looks every bit as valuable and eye catching as its near 20 grams of 18k gold indicate.

Awesome movement, lifelike design true to a snake's anatomy, even the underside of his chinny chin chin is decorated with scales like a real snake. Tiny red ruby eyes and Victorian acanthus flourish on the head typical for the period. From the side he even has tiny teeth in the design.

The clasp can be worn at the back but with the way the snake chain widens, I wore it to the side so the head was more visible and it held in place since the weight of the body keeps it from spinning on the neck too freely. You could also wear the snake head to the front and fashion a connector (like an additional clasp or double dog clip,) to be able to add pendants to the spring ring so that they dangle from his mouth front and center.

Found in France, there's a small partial stamp on the spring ring but nothing legible. Clearly solid gold and tested to confirm at 18k which is the standard in France. The loop at his mouth which like had a hallmark appears to have been reinforced for strength and stability (this is seen under magnification, it appears as normal as when it was made).

Props and additional items not included. Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

MEASUREMENTS:
It weighs 19.6 grams. It is just under 16 inches in length. The head is 27mm long from neck to the loop at the nose. The articulated chain body is 4.3mm down at the widest tapering down to 2.7mm.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
The piece has two welds, 1.5 and 4 inches from the tail side. They are not glaring, they are tidy and well done but show as a little interruption to the otherwise uniform scale pattern of each link. It just gives it a little ripple appearance when viewed from one side. Stable, sturdy and ready to wear. The tail is also fixed / straight for the last inch which I think is how it was made. A bit of wear to the coiled tail from a loop rubbing on it for over 125+ years but its still super stable and actually a feature I like to find to actually verify age so we know it's an authentic Victorian antique.

Clasp functions well, very wearable and interesting.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

My disclaimer with all my pieces - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition.

I would be delighted if you'd follow me in my shop. Thanks for stopping by!
