Juicy Victorian Antique Crimson Red Pear Natural Garnet 18k Gold Scrolled Teardrop Pendant Ornate Inner Glow
I take regularly scheduled inventory trips to Europe to offer you a selection of carefully curated antiques. These have all been hand picked one at a time and most are one of a kind.
ABOUT:
I love antique garnets and especially seek out the fine Victorian examples that have such a wonderful inner glow. This Victorian teardrop pendant was a brooch that has been converted with ornate scrolling details to the rich and buttery 18k gold. At the center is the large pear garnet cabochon that has a deep crimson color that glows a lighter red from within.
Note I gave it a better cleaning after photographing so refer to the first three photos in the listing for the most accurate representation of it.
Beautiful movement and nice size, this one can be worn alone or layered on a longer chain as well. The scrolling gold work gives the piece such a beautiful ornate design. Also wonderful that it was a brooch in that it was more lightly worn so the stone has a lovey sheen and polish without a lot of abrasions and no dullness to the surface.
Found in France. No hallmarks remain but tests at 18k gold which is the standard there.
Please note the measurements as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures. Some of my buyers "draw out" an example to get an idea of scale in person.
Antique Boxes, props, hooks, chains, mice : ) not included. I just used some staging chains to show examples of how to wear.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Weight is 4.3g. The stone is nice and sturdy but the gold has a lightweight hand feel because it was made of stamped repousse work with a flat closed back and vacant space between the raised scrolls.
36x21mm not including the dangling loop. The garnet is large, 15x9mm.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
A tiny bit of surface wear under magnification but the garnet is in better than most condition considering age of over 150 years. After photographing it, I noticed a bit of build up as I was studying it, especially around the base of the stone where it meets the bezel. I was able to clean that up so what is seen in some of the pics is actually no longer visible. Refer to the cover photo to see how it looks now, after the better cleaning. With the closed back I didn't want to soak it but it's a beautiful piece. A few tiny shallowest of impressions to the gold work leaving a slight ripple but again overall good condition considering age. Some ripples to the back and you can see where the pin back was smoothed.
The stone has natural inclusions that can light up more in direct light. I showed it in sunlight to highlight the color of the gemstone, but it also highlights the inclusions and the faint surface wear making that look worse than it does in real life. Again, the stone is in better than most condition considering age.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : ) There are no dark spots to the gold, it was just difficult to photograph because it is so shiny and mirrored that it reflects its surroundings including the green trees out the window.
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
Thanks so much for looking at my items!
