Vintage Rose Cut Perpignan GARNET Poissarde Hoop EARRINGS 18k Gold French Belle Epoque Foiled Domed Back Crimson Red
ABOUT:
Beautiful French vintage 18k gold poissarde hoop earrings, each set with 4 foil backed rose cut garnets in a domed closed back setting with rivet details on each end. The garnets have a crimson red color that can catch the light from the back to reflect a lighter fire.
Perpignan Garnets are atop my fave gemstones in the world list. These are definitely in the antique style and are by no means new, but looking at the color and fabrication, I do not expect that they are from the Victorian period, more likely Art Deco into the vintage period.
In olden times Perpignan Garnets were thought to cure blood disorders and excessive anger, and symbolized constancy and loyalty. They are named as such for the region where they were mined in the South of France. They are known for their beautiful clear scarlet color and brilliance, along with the way the stones were cut.
These are worn similar to the French dormeuse earrings, where they are inserted from the back of the ear towards the front. The hooked end of the ear wire then latches into the loop just above the stones. You'll see a little gold loop at the top of the ear wire - this serves as a bumper to hold the earrings out straight on the ear, where the loop rests against the back of the earlobe to keep the earrings from spinning downward due to the weight of the stones. So they always face outward while wearing.
Found in Paris France, Stamped with the French hallmark for 18k gold.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
Each garnet is about 5mm. 25mm top to bottom. Combined Weighs 6.3g.
Antique props, boxes, chains etc. not included.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
There is some buildup to the gold between the back so the domed settings and the rope twisted poissarde gold wire, but these can't be soaked with the domed back setting so they just need a bit more with a damp cloth and gentle wiping. I'll give them a better light cleaning before sending as well so the stones and settings will appear better in real life than in pics : ).
One of the earrings is more rounded and the other more flat at the top ear wire but this is not seen while wearing as only the small section of wire between the bumper (see above) and hooked end at the front of the ear wire are visible while wearing.
A few tiny nicks or more of a nibble but no chips or major abrasions to the garnets, they have a nice sheen and polish.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, small nicks. They also may have some build up and some imperfections and other age related wear, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any glaring issues above and they are all still functioning and wearable. For pieces with more patina, this can always be cleaned up / polished by the buyer but most of my customers prefer original patina so I am selling them as is.
Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
I enjoy making my customers happy and matching unique pieces with new homes. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions! It means a lot to me that you are visiting my shop! : )
